Diets That Help Clear Up Acne

Diets That Help Clear Up Acne

Acne affects up to 85 percent of all adolescents and can persist into adulthood. Although a link between diet and acne is still controversial, healthy eating habits may be the key to clear skin. A recent Norwegian study headed by University of Oslo researcher Jon Anders Halvorsen suggests a diet high in refined or processed foods and low in fresh raw vegetables may negatively impact the clarity of skin in adolescents. There are three diets you can try that may help reduce the symptoms of acne and improve your health.

The Paleo Diet

Berries are an important part of the Paleo Diet.

The Paleo Diet is based on the theory that the omnivorous diet of early hunter-gatherers is the healthiest way to eat. Eliminate grain products, dairy, beans and soy from your diet, as well as any refined or sugary foods. Eat whole foods that are high in fiber, such as tubers and root vegetables, fruits, berries and nuts. Increase your protein intake by adding free-range chicken, lean wholesome meats, eggs and seafood. Choose products that are in as close to their natural state as possible.

The South Beach Diet

Combine protein with a salad for a low-glycemic meal.

The South Beach Diet is low-glycemic and focuses on eliminating carbohydrates, refined foods and sugars. In a survey done by Dr. Panta Rouhani and her colleagues from the American Academy of Dermatology, 87 percent of people suffering from mild to moderate acne reported their skin improved within three months after starting the South Beach Diet. The diet is done in three phases. For the first two weeks, eat plenty of chicken, beef, turkey, and shellfish with vegetables, eggs, cheese, nuts and salads. Avoid carbohydrates such as breads, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, fruits and sugary foods. After two weeks, add small amounts of whole grain breads and cereals, whole wheat pastas, brown rice, sweet potatoes and fruits such as apples, bananas, oranges, pears and cantaloupe. The third phase is the maintenance phase. Eat three servings of fruit and whole grains a day and as much protein as you want. Adjust your diet as needed maintain a steady and healthy weight.

The Raw Foods Detox Diet

Blend raw fruits and vegetables into a smoothie.

The Raw Foods Detox Diet was formulated by clinical nutritionist Natalia Rose and is made up of unprocessed and uncooked plant foods prepared at temperatures less than 116F. Cooking is thought to destroy beneficial enzymes and diminish the nutritional value of foods. A study done by Lenka J. Zajic says that participants on a raw foods diet reported an improvement in all skin conditions. Focus on fresh fruit, vegetables, sprouts, seeds, nuts, beans and seaweed. Gradually eliminate cooked food, meat and dairy from your diet until you are eating at least 75 percent raw food. Use a dehydrator under temperatures of 116F to dry fruits and vegetables. Sprout seeds, grains and beans in glass jars and soak nuts overnight. Blend fruits and vegetables into juices and smoothies. Consider adding fresh young coconut milk to your diet. Buy organic produce whenever possible to avoid possible contamination from pesticides and chemicals.
