How Does Soda & Mentos Work?

How Does Soda & Mentos Work?

It was an Internet sensation that started in 2005. The video of putting Mentos in a 2-liter soda bottle and running away as it shot up was a big hit. After watching the video, people wondered what made it work.

Soda

A 2-liter bottle of Diet Coke is used in the video, but other sodas also work. The high amount of carbon dioxide in soda is the reason why this mixture explodes into a geyser.

Mentos

Mentos are made of sugar, glucose syrup, hydrogenated coconut oil, gelatin, dextrin, flavor gum arabic and cornstarch. Mentos is gummy sugar with color added. If you can do it quickly, put the whole roll of Mentos in the bottle of soda.

Carbon Dioxide

Mentos break the surface tension when they enter the soda. The surface texture of gum arabic and gelatin allow carbon dioxide bubbles to break up and form in the candy's rough texture as it falls through the soda; the farther it falls, the more carbon dioxide bubbles form. This increase of carbon dioxide bubbles cascades in the soda to cause the geyser.
