Those with the body type of an endomorph would probably agree readily with the following statement: gaining weight is all too easy, but losing fat seems nearly impossible. An endomorph is categorized by a larger, more muscular frame than an ectomorph, but he also carries more body fat naturally and losing weight is his biggest challenge. However, with time, patience and persistence, even an endomorph can successfully diet down to lean condition. All it takes is a few tips.
Focus on the low-carb diet
Hearing this is usually a dieter's worst nightmare, as almost every "comfort" food imaginable contains substantial amounts of carbohydrates, but for the endomorphic dieter, this is an unfortunate truth--low carb diets will produce vastly superior effects for those predisposed to carrying larger amounts of body fat. With that said, how do you survive a low-carb diet?
Avoid threatening situations
The real challenge to low-carb dieting is mental. Your body can thrive adequately on a low-carb diet (with low-carb being defined as less than 30 grams a day of carbohydrates). The difficulty is that nearly everything we are offered on a regular basis contains carbs. Going out to dinner suddenly becomes a nightmare, as does finding a snack to eat while watching a movie. To alleviate these problems, try to avoid putting yourself in situations where you might be tempted to capitalize on a moment of weakness and cheat on your diet--stay out of the break room if there are pastries, stay out of restaurants that are not "low-carb friendly," and stay away from people who like to play the role of enabler.
Dodging the mind games
Eating is often an activity engaged in out of boredom. When coupled with the fact that most snack foods are laden with carbohydrates (after all, who wants to snack on assorted meat squares and green vegetables?), this is another recipe for disaster. The trick to dodging this bullet is to engage yourself in additional activities to keep your mind off of food. This solution packs a one-two punch, as you will be taking your mind off of food while simultaneously increasing your total activity level and burning extra calories.
Cut calories... more
As an endomorph, your body will be predisposed to retaining body weight, even in the event of a mild caloric deficit. To that end, understand that you might need to cut more calories from your diet than your non-endomorphic friends. While you might know someone that can skip a meal and lose five pounds, understand that will never be you, and you will have to work harder at dieting to accomplish the same goals. Accepting this is the first step to overcoming the weight loss difficulties inherent to endomorphs .
Increase cardio
Along with having to cut calories more sharply than others, to achieve the lean body you desire, you will also have to increase activity. If you are already in the weight room three days a week, this means you need to add supplemental activity in the form of additional cardio. As you are on a low-carb diet, the best form of cardio will be low-intensity cardio such as brisk walking. The best time for a dieting endomorph to perform cardio is in the morning on an empty stomach. Performing at least four days a week of early-morning fasted cardio will get you that much closer to your goal.
