Unlike modern diet and exercise fads that promote the use of quick and radical lifestyle changes to achieve permanent weight loss, Ayurveda offers just a few simple weight loss tips that are based on total body balancing, portion control and deprivation eradication.
Rest
Go to bed before 10 p.m. and arise before 6 a.m. for the best sleep quantity and quality. Sleep deprivation studies have associated the lack of sleep with poor eating habits, sluggish metabolism and depression, which contribution to weight gain. Take Ashwagandha Rasayana, an Ayurvedic herb that naturally increases your mind's ability to adapt to emotionally taxing situations, to help you sleep more soundly and peacefully.
Diet
Eat a consistent diet of three meals per day. Have a small breakfast followed by a mid-morning snack if you are hungry. Eat a hearty lunch and allow yourself a mid-afternoon snack. Eat a light dinner at least two hours before you go to bed at night.
Portion Control
Do not eat more food at one meal than you could hold in your two cupped palms. Stop eating before you are full.
Deprivation
Do not fast. Fasting disrupts your metabolism by not giving your body anything to digest. Avoid skipping meals. Your digestion system needs to get used to metabolizing food at approximately the same times every day to function at its maximum capacity.
Cravings
Deter food cravings by eating a wide variety of different foods throughout the day. When you eat an imbalanced diet that includes mostly proteins and carbohydrates, parts of your body will remain hungry and malnourished. This will in turn trigger your tissues to send hunger messages to your brain and you will crave carbohydrate-rich foods like thick and heavy desserts.
Thwart these food cravings by eating a breakfast of warm cereal and fruit , a substantial lunch of cooked vegetables, lentils and whole grains and a small dinner of hot, light foods such as non-cream soups, water-cooked grains such as quinoa, barley or cous cous and sauteed vegetables with extra-virgin olive oil.
Triphala Cleansing
Incorporate Triphala cleansing into your Ayurvedic weight loss program. Triphala is a natural Ayurvedic cleansing agent composed of the three dried fruits bibhitaki, amalaki and haritaki. This natural antioxidant mildly maintains regularity, exhilarates and nourishes your tissues and encourages healthy absorption and digestion. Triphala comes in many forms, including pills, powders and liquids. Since Triphala is a bowel regulator and not a laxative, it can be taken daily.
Exercise
Engage in both active exercises, such as yoga and aerobics, and passive exercise, such as body massage. Swimming and walking are also excellent exercise choices. Do not overexert yourself during exercise. Only exert half of your body capacity when exercising and use rhythmic breathing to stay internally balanced.
