In spite of dieting, you may still have excess weight that just won't go away. Maybe it's time to consider a balanced mind-body approach to reaching your goal weight. Through a holistic approach you will discover that there is more to weight loss than simply what you eat. You can incorporate the following holistic tips into any weight-loss plan.
Positive Thinking
In order to approach a weight-loss goal holistically, begin by embracing the correct mental and emotional state regarding your body and your weight goals.
Negative thinking can lead to feelings of poor self-worth, which creates an ongoing sense of failure. You may find that it's easier to believe negative thoughts than to contradict them with positive ideas. Negative thinking--referred to by energy healers as "low vibration" thinking--perpetuates a cycle of defeat, making it harder to reach your goals.
Here are some ways to combat negative and self-defeating thoughts:
*Make a list of negative things that you tell yourself about your weight, and recognize that they are are nothing more than thoughts (thinking them doesn't make them true). By writing them down and addressing each thought individually, you are better able to talk those thoughts out of the way when they show up again.
*Create a positive mantra using can-do language that supports you toward your goal, such as, "I am easily and effortlessly reaching my healthiest physical size and feeling great about myself." Repeat your mantra throughout the day and post it in places that you see often to remind you to think positively.
*Spend time with upbeat people who understand your goals and are willing to support you. This can have an impact on the way you think and feel.
*Read uplifting books (or watch movies) about people who have overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. Avoid negativity in your media choices. It can put a damper on your efforts to maintain a positive state of mind.
*Don't beat yourself up. If you suffer setbacks on the way to reaching your goals, give yourself a break. Keep moving forward.
*Visualize yourself thin. Imagine yourself living your life at your ideal weight.
*Use positive self-talk. Avoid saying negative things out loud about yourself or your body.
*Celebrate even your smallest successes. Don't wait for huge milestones to recognize your efforts, or get frustrated if progress is slower than you would prefer.
Physical Approach
More than simply eating less, holistic weight loss involves a peaceful and balanced physical state. Add the following practices to your current program:
*Meditate daily. Take the time to clear your thoughts and relax your body. Stress can often lead to overeating. Meditation will help you to alleviate excess stress and regain focus.
*Go for a swim. The weightlessness of water is a great way to both soothe and calm the body while you get an excellent workout.
*Connect with nature. Instead of just running on the treadmill at the gym, go for a brisk mountain walk, or jog along a nearby nature trail. Getting back to nature is healthy physically and mentally, and can boost your mood.
*Gather a network of support. Find others who are working toward similar goals and get together in the mornings for a neighborhood walk or to share healthy low-fat recipes.
*Eat smaller portions more often, as opposed to three large meals a day. This can help keep you from getting hungry.
*Transition to a whole-food diet that incorporates an abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Cut out animal proteins and processed foods as much as possible, and avoid high-fat foods and sweets.
*Start taking chia seeds regularly to boost your intake of dietary fiber (which helps to increase your sense of fullness and prevents excess hunger). Chia seeds are an excellent source of nutrients and have almost no calories. You can add them to a variety of different foods or eat them plain.
*Don't drink your calories. Drink water when you are thirsty and avoid filling up on empty sugar calories in carbonated beverages and other sweetened drinks.
*Get started on a bowel cleanse, and visit a colon hydrotherapist if possible. A bowel cleanse can jump-start any weight loss program and give you drastically better results. Experts at the Colonic Cleanse and Constipation Resource Center explain, "By losing weight through maintaining a healthful diet and exercising, and then cleansing your colon to help get rid of toxic waste, you will begin to feel more energetic and you will put less strain on your body by reducing unneeded baggage."
*Work with an iridologist or energy healer to discover issues that may be affecting your ability to lose weight. Frankie Avalon Wolfe, M.H.H., Ph.D. says, "[An iridologist] should be able to locate your inherent weaknesses, and provide you with information or therapies that will enable you to reach or sustain the healthiest possible existence for you."
*Treat yourself to a monthly therapeutic massage. Learn to love your body again and treat it well, even before you reach your ideal weight.
